About Us

Thumbs Up!® for Health is the health literacy program of the Institute for Education on Health and Research, a Massachusetts-based 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

Thumbs Up!® for Health materials have been published since 2006. This pictorial approach to patient education was created by Dr. Susan Oliverio, a board-certified internist with over thirty years experience in health care. Her special interest is patient education aiming to reach populations with limited literacy, language, and cultural barriers. She is a practicing primary care physician and serves as the assistant medical director of the Rhode Island Hospital Center for Primary Care and Specialty Medicine. Dr. Oliverio has extensive experience in the community health setting having worked at the South End Community Health Center and at Massachusetts General Hospital, Charlestown HealthCare, located in Boston. As an Assistant Professor of Medicine (clinical) at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University, she has taught hundreds of medical residents, medical students, and college students interested in health communication and public health. Dr. Oliverio has also consulted on patient education activities with managed care organizations including Neighborhood Health Plan of Massachusetts, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, and San Francisco Health Plan.

In 2012, she co-founded the Institute for Education on Health and Research as a means to educate the general public utilizing more effective and innovative strategies for health communication.
